Villanueva del Trabuco is hardly the oldest village in the area, even though historians say there is some evidence of a Roman presence here. Officially records show that the first reference to Trabuco was in 1620. The chronicles record mention of an area of pastureland referred to as Trabuco. In an attempt to repopulate this area, Carlos III, a hundred years later encouraged German and Flemish settlers to work the land here, as locals feared the indigenous predators of that period.
As with every town in Andalucia fiestas and fairs are the highlight of the year for the townsfolk. The first of these commence with Candelmas on the 1st of February, followed by a Carnival at the end of the month. Easter of course brings more processions, and when Samana Santa arrives, the streets of the town come to life with the colourful tradition. The San Marcos festivities commence on the 25th of April, when virtually the entire town takes to the countryside for a picnic to commemorate their patron saint on the countryside.
