Les Landes, along the Gulf of Biscay, is an area with some 6000 km2 forest. Originally the region had wild horses, inpenetrable bogs and inhospitable paths. These have been replaced with excellent infrastructure, but the quiet has remained. The coastal area (Côte d’Argent) boasts some 230 km of beautiful, wide sandy beaches. Behind the dunes you will find a number of larger and smaller lakes, making virtually any water sport possible.
The climate
The pleasant climate of the Atlantic coast is a typical sea climate with plenty of sun (without the stifling heat) and less rain. July and August are the months with the most sun, but the late spring and early fall (May-June, September-October) also usually bring pleasant temperatures. Thundershowers erupt abruptly and disappear at the same speed. Cloudy days are scarcely seen, and even then the temperature remains about 25-30 degrees (Celcius).
Places worth visiting
Cities rich in culture include Dax, Bayonne, Biarritz, St. Jean Pied-de-porte, en Bordeaux. Also Lourdes is definitely worth a vist. Welcoming bathing resorts: Mimizan, Vieux Boucau, Capbreton, and St. Jean de Luz. Take breath-taking trips by car through the northern part of the Spanish Pyrenees. Some border towns have various shops offering leather goods and liquor. Col d’Ibardin for example; drive towards San Sebastian, after St. Jean de Luz take the Urrugne exit.
Les Landes offers a wide variety of possibilities for the perfect holiday. The healthy combination of forest and sea air has existed here for centuries. Thus it is with good cause that more and more tourists are discovering this region as the perfect holiday destination, in any season.
