North-East England is one of the nine official regions of England and comprises the combined area of Northumberland, County Durham, Tyne and Wear, and Tees Valley.
Explore more castles than anywhere else in England: some, like Bamburgh on its rocky outcrop against the sea, are still lived in. And discover the region’s significance as the cradle of English Christianity in peaceful contemplation at Lindisfarne and Durham Cathedral.
As well as its urban centres of Tyneside, Wearside and Teesside the region is also noted for the richness of its natural beauty. Northumberland National Park, the region's coastline, its section of the Pennines including Teesdale and Weardale provides evidence for this.

Discover the natural beauty of North East England along the 2000-year-old Hadrian's Wall. This 73-mile-long World Heritage Site has 25 Roman forts and museums to visit. Two of the best are Housesteads and Vindolanda. Both have museums and, during the summer, Vindolanda has archaeological digs which visitors can take part in.
There are a number of excellent cycle routes and if you want a really long walk you can follow the whole length of the Wall on the National Trail Path - taking an average of six days to complete!
Famous as a home to some of the best and most beautiful cycling and walking in the country, Northumberland provides a haven for bird watchers and nature lovers, tranquil spots for golf and fishing and activities to quicken the pulse and raise adrenaline levels.
