The Highland area covers most of the mainland and inner-Hebridean parts of the former counties of Inverness-shire and Ross and Cromarty, all of Sutherland, Caithness and Nairnshire, and small parts of Argyll and Moray.

In the extreme north of the Scottish Highlands the lochs are so deep and the air so clear, the seas so wild and the beaches so long that there's space to think about the things that are close to your heart. Take a walk beside one of the majestic lochs to discover that when the only sound you can hear is your own breath, life seems to slow down and cares just melt away.

Loch Ness is best known for the alleged sightings of the legendary Loch Ness Monster, also known as "Nessie". Loch Ness is deeper than any other loch with the exception of Loch Morar.

The Isle of Skye is the largest and most northerly island in the Inner Hebrides of Scotland. The island is renowned for its spectacular scenery, vibrant culture and heritage, and its abundant wildlife including the Golden Eagle, Red Deer and Salmon.

Castle Tioram is a ruined castle that sits on the tidal island Eilean Tioram in Loch Moidart, Lochaber, Highland, Scotland.

Urquhart Castle sits beside Loch Ness in Scotland along the A82 road, between Fort William and Inverness. It is close to the village of Drumnadrochit. Though extensively ruined, it was in its day one of the largest strongholds of medieval Scotland, and remains an impressive structure, splendidly situated on a headland overlooking Loch Ness. It is also near the castle where the majority of Nessie (Loch Ness Monster) sightings occur.

Ben Nevis is the highest mountain in the British Isles. It is located at the western end of the Grampian Mountains in the Lochaber area of Scotland, close to the town of Fort William.

The Mallaig railway is used during the filming of the Harry Potter series of films, and the Hogwarts Express can be seen during periods of filming during the summer months. Many other local areas are used for location filming too.

The 1996 film Breaking the Waves was largely filmed in Mallaig and the surrounding area, and the beach scenes of Local Hero were filmed at nearby Morar. The smaller villages of Arisaig and Morar are located a few miles south of Mallaig.
