The Trieste plateau has approximately 1500 caves of various sizes. Among the most famous are the Grotta Gigante, the largest tourist cave in the world, with a single cavity large enough to contain St Peter's in Rome, and the Cave of Trebiciano at the bottom of which flows the Timavo River. This river dives underground at Škocjan Caves in Slovenia which are on UNESCO list and only a few kilometres from Trieste.
Gorizia is renowned for the production of outstanding wines. Being sheltered from the north by a mountain ridge, Gorizia is protected from the cold Bora wind which affects most of the neighbouring areas. The town thus retains a mild Mediterranean climate throughout the year, making it a popular resort.
