The Area:
From Malaga the A35 to Granada will lead you to the signs for Casabermeja and turning off the motorway at this junction, the sign for Colmenar will guide you to the Hotel Arco del Sol, which will appear on your right hand side. This winding road will lead you through the real Andalucia taking you to Colmenar, the capital of the Malaga Mountain towns.
It is hard to comprehend when you arrive here that you are in fact 696 metres above sea level. With only 3000 or so inhabitants, Colmenar like so many of these mountain towns and villages has seen many social and historical changes over the centuries. This upper area of Axarquia is surround in history dating back to the beginning of time, though more recently the Roman and Arabic influence both in architecture and culture can still be found in the surrounding towns and villages.
With these Roman and Moorish influences, Colmenar has been left a legacy of culture and tradition, which now form the rich tapestry of life in present day Andalucia. There have been many visitors to this unique part of Spain over the years, and the cuisine here also bears testament to this fact.
For example, the benefits of chilled Gazpacho were well known to the Romans as a source of vitamins for the labourers building the roads beneath the scorching Andalucian sun. And for the winter months, Garbanzos, a traditional dish of chickpeas cooked in stock, helps to keep the cold at bay. The honey here in Colmenar is also renowned for being the best in the area and coupled with the local wines, mealtimes understandably become a wonderfully protracted affair.
