The La Viñuela reservoir has the distinction of being the largest in the Province of Málaga providing, apart from water, a high degree of Inland Rural Tourism for this mainly agricultural area. Before these waters filled this man made spectacle, some 10 sites of archaeological interest were excavated for Prehistoric remains. However, alongside the River Guaro Neolithic and Roman artefacts including stone tools, adobe huts, and a bronze-smelting furnace have been discovered.
With the breathtaking scenery of the Sierra de Tejeda Mountain range, one would expect La Vinuela to be elevated far higher than its 150 meters above sea level. The landscape of low hills is in fact perfect for the crops of cereals and olives, which are grown here in abundance.

The circular tower of the Torre de la Atalaya, a sixteenth century observation post was built to defend this area like so many others during that period. Legend says this 10 metre high construction was built in a single night with materials from materials from the surrounding area and with water from the River Guaro. This tower had a partner on the Agudo hill, but only ruins of this structure remain today.
