The Golden Mile is one of the main tourist attractions in the Durban area, with its wide stretches of golden sands, artificially separated by various piers. The Mile is also a well-known surfer's haven, and there are excellent opportunities for sun-worshippers and swimmers to enjoy the sub-tropical sunshine and warm waters of the Indian Ocean.

Protected all year round by lifeguards and shark nets, these popular beaches are lined with a mix of tourist hotels and residential apartments. The 1970’s saw a marked increase in development along this waterfront, although there are still remnants of Durban's art-deco architecture interspersed among the popular restaurants and nightclubs.

Durban today also boasts of being the busiest container port in Africa, and the world's 9th busiest port. Surrounded by ample tourist attractions, Durban is particularly popular with domestic tourists from Johannesburg, as well as scores of international visitors keen on discovering this part of Africa.

To the south of Durban lies the famed Paradise of the Zulu kingdom, the South Coast. This holiday heaven with its wide golden beaches, warm waters from the Indian Ocean, and bordered by green hills, attracts scores of visitors to its many small scenic towns and villages. The subtropical weather in this region encourages the growth of abundant foliage with colourful blooms. Small wonder this area is also know as the Hibiscus Coast, given the colour, variety and abundance of the fauna here.

Documented as ‘The Greatest Shoal on Earth’, the annual sardine run sees billions of small silvery fish winding their way along the coastline, pursued by thousands of dolphins, game fish, sharks, and diving sea birds. The South Coast is one of only two places in the world where such a phenomenon takes place.
