Situated equidistance from Malaga and Velez Malaga at just 33kms, Riogordo lays in the Axarquia region of Malaga Province. This small hamlet has some 3000 inhabitants, and unlike many on these Inland Andalucian towns, Riogordo took its name from the local river, and not in the traditionally opposite customary way.
The first settlement dates back to Neolithic times almost certainly due to the mineral laden waters of the Rio Gordo River, which literally translated means ‘Fat River.’ Tombs have been found dating back to the Phoenician colonization of the area, and in Auta farmstead 3rd century remains of mosaics laid by the Romans during their occupation have also been found.

Records show that the village’s growth and the flow of population was sufficient by 1561, that Riogordo had three brothels controlled by one Sancho Marroquí, while three innkeepers were in charge of ‘sheltering in their houses and inns all the women of the street that may go there to earn money with their bodies’.
Nowadays Riogordo relies on the hills and valleys surrounding this typical Andalucian town, which are laden with olive trees, forming the backbone of the local economy.
