The modern city of Orlando allegedly owes its name to a soldier by the name of Orlando Reeves who fought during the war against the Seminole Indians, although it seems he was actually involved in operating a sugar mill and plantation some 30 miles North at Spring Gardens. Prior to being known by its current name, Orlando was known as Jernigan, after the first permanent settler, a cattleman named Aaron Jernigan who acquired land alongside Lake Holden.

Suffering greatly at the time of the Civil War with the Federal Blockade, the reconstruction era led to a population boom and the city’s incorporation in 1875. For the next 20 years Orlando’s fruit industry bolstered the economy in Florida until in 1894-1895, when the great freeze ruined many independent owners and their groves.

Orlando grew into a popular resort between the Spanish American and First World War’s, and later when Lockheed Martin built their plant in 1956, further prosperity and growth took place. With the demand for labour at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, and Patrick Air force Base, residents can easily commute from the city suburbs, and now many High Tech industries have re-located to this area.

However the largest up turn for Orlando’s economy has to be Walt Disney’s decision to build Walt Disney World in Orlando in 1965. Having considered locations such as Tampa and Miami, Orlando was chosen mainly due to the fact that there was less threat from hurricanes. By the time this famous resort in Florida opened in 1971, Orlando had been firmly put on the map as one of the most popular worldwide holiday venues available. The resulting influx of tourism ushered an explosion in economic and population growths.
