During the Moorish occupation, Torremolinos became an important centre due to the abundance of water from the Los Manantiales area, which at that time ran untamed to the beach.
The Moors soon built numerous mills along this stream, and when in 1300 a defensive tower was constructed at the end of Calle San Miguel, the towns name was cast forever. The literal translation of Torremolinos means ‘Tower-Mills’, and that Moorish tower still stands to this day.
In 1930 when Sir George Langworthy purchased the Santa Clara Castle in Torremolinos, and converted it into a Residential Hotel, he effectively established the first tourist destination on the Costa del Sol.
