Costa del Sol, Spain

Costa del Sol

The Costa del Sol is situated in the Autonomous region of Andalucia and comprises of the stretch of coastal towns and beaches from the Mediterranean coast of Malaga Province to the edge of the Province of Cadiz. The Costa del Sol means Sunshine Coast mostly due to the amount of sunshine that this part of Spain has during the year.

Tourism in the Costa del Sol

The start of tourism on the Costa del Sol goes back to the 19th Century when an Englishman named George Langworthy and his wife settled in Torremolinos. In the beginning of the 20th Century George Langworthy and his wife converted their home “Santa Clara Castle” into accommodation for foreigners, charging them one peseta per night.

Years later others started to convert their homes and the hotel and accommodation industry in the Costa del Sol grew. By 1959 the Pez Espada Hotel opened its doors and Torremolinos became a busy tourist resort attracting holiday makers from all over Europe.

Now the entire stretch of the Costa del Sol is a bustling tourist resort where towns merge into one another such as Benalmádena, Fuengirola, Mijas Costa and the famous Marbella.

With a fabulous Mediterranean climate, cheap flights, budget and luxury hotels, and over 50 golf courses, the Costa del Sol attracts tourists all year round.

Living on the Costa del Sol

Now with international companies opening offices and moving to Spain, the Costa del Sol has vast become multicultural. English is the second language on the Costa del Sol and is spoken by a vast majority in tourist areas. In the inland towns and villages, English is not spoken by many people; however this is changing due to children being taught English in schools.

British expatriates are the largest of the migrants living in the Costa del Sol, followed by Moroccans, Germans, Argentineans and Colombians in this order.

Malaga City has over half a million residents making this the 6th largest city in Spain.

Whether you are coming to Costa del Sol on holiday, thinking of moving or setting up a business, the following links will help you.
