Benahavis, Costa del Sol

Benahavís is a quaint little mountain village situated on the Costa del Sol between Marbella and Estepona. Benahavís has many Golf Courses where there 9 out of a total of 60 in the Costa del Sol. Benahavís village although small is called “the dining room of the Costa del Sol” due to its enormous selection of restaurants.

Benahavís takes its name from the Arab ruler Havis, who reigned in Montemayor Castle at the end of the 11th Century. In Arabic, ”Ben al Havis” means “son of Havis”. The ruins of Montemayor Castle can still be visited today and from its position on the top of the highest mountain at Benahavís, panoramic views of Gibraltar and North Africa can be enjoyed on a clear day.

Benahavís is 500 metres above sea level, just 7 kilometres inland from the Guadalmina Golf Course, and can reached by driving through the rio Guadalmina gorge up into the mountains. The municipality is over 14,500 hectares with more than 70% of the area classified as being of environmental interest.

The River Guadalmina flows through Las Angosturas Canyon and here you can enjoy the local fauna including the Moflón del Atlas. Benahavis is the only place outside of Africa where this rare breed of deer can be found in the wild. Other wildlife includes foxes, genet, mountain goats and birds. Las Angosturas is a heavily wooded area with oaks, chestnut trees, pines, cork trees and Mediterranean herbs like rock rose, thyme and rosemary.

Golf in Benahavis

Set in the mountains of Benhavis, Monte Mayor is one of the most spectacular golf courses on the Costa del Sol with cascading waterfalls and the most superb views you will find in any location. The quality of greens and the natural beauty of the surroundings will make your round of golf memorable.

Everywhere you look the views at the El Paraiso Golf Course are magnificent, from many holes you can see the blue of the Mediterranean and there is always the backdrop of the dramatic mountains. Gary Player has used these natural resources brilliantly to create one of the best designed courses on the Costa del Sol.

The second oldest club on the Costa del Sol is Guadalmina which opened in 1959 as a nine-hole course.

The original South course was designed by Javier Arana, who extended it to a 18 hole par 72 in the late 1960s. The 10th and 11th hole of Guadalmina south run along the sea, and the course is bordered by well established trees.

The North course (18 holes, par 71) opened in 1973, and was designed by Folco Nardi. This course is more gentle than its predecessor, but no less interesting, and it is quite tight in places.

Other golf courses in Benahavis include La Zagaleta, Los Arqueros Golf and Country Club, Los Flamingos Golf, and the Marbella Club Golf Resort.
