Pet Passports
If you are contemplating Returning Pets to the UK and your Dog or Cat Passport is up to date, then you should have no problem with Exporting your Pets to Great Britain. Make certain that your Pets Passport has no alterations or crossed out entries, in which case these entries must be stamped by the Veterinary.
Shieldiag Kennels offers a Passport Checking Service, which can in many cases resolve minor issues and give owners peace of mind that their Pets Travel Paperwork is valid.
In addition, Shieldiag Kennels provides a Pets Taxi Service to and from the airport and is completely conversant with Airport Requirements for Flying Pets Abroad. Shieldiag Kennels offers a totally comprehensive service tailor made to Pet Owner’s individual requirements. This service includes Pet Travel Boxes and a Pet Delivery/Collection Service anywhere in Spain.
For owners Returning Cats and Dogs to the UK, the following criteria must be complied with in order to return your pet successfully.
1) The animal must be fitted with a microchip.
2) A Rabies Vaccination must be given; this may be a booster injection if the animal has been vaccinated before against Rabies, or a primary injection. In the latter case we strongly recommend that the vaccination be repeated 3-4 weeks later, to minimise the possibility of the animal failing the test due to insufficient antibodies. (This is more likely to occur in young animals). It is rare to see test failures in older animals; such pets can be immune-incompetent, ie incapable of mounting a normal antibody response to the vaccine stimulus.
REMEMBER once you start preparing your Pet Passport to or from the UK it is very important that you maintain the rabies vaccinations within the recommended period.
Once this stage has been completed your UK Pet Passport can now be prepared.
3) One month later the animal’s blood is sampled. The serum from this sample is sent to a listed authorised laboratory. The Veterinary Clinic then receives the results and if the level of antibodies is equal to or greater than 0.5iu /ml this will result in a pass.

Please note that your Pet Passport will not become valid for UK travel until SIX CALENDAR MONTHS FROM THE DATE THE BLOOD WAS TAKEN.
This may cause difficulties with your travel plans in which case Shieldiag Kennels has a facility for Long-Term Boarding Kennels for Cats and Dogs in Spain and will be happy to accommodate your pet.
The Veterinary Surgeon is responsible for your animals Pet Passport and the Vet issuing the Passport MUST see the Rabies Vaccination Certificate, the Blood Sample result certificate and the Microchip Certificate with the DATE of the implantation clearly visible. In addition you must provide the Vet with proof of ownership of the animal eg; your passport or residencia number, correlating with the owner’s details on the pets certificates.
This becomes particularly important when the Veterinary has new clients who have had their Pets Exportation Paperwork prepared by another Veterinary Clinic, either in Spain or the U.K.
Shieldiag Kennels invariably have clients Cats or Dogs in their Kennels for six months awaiting their return to the UK and would undertake the preparation of Pets Passport with a local Veterinary Surgeon. Owners who already have valid documentation must pay for a Passport from the Veterinary Surgeon and have their details transferred onto the Passport.
4) For each journey made to the UK or to Ireland via mainland Britain, the animal must have a Fitness to Travel Examination, with a Tick and Tapeworm treatment 24 - 48 hours before embarkation on a ferry or plane.
